Dhoompana Therapy – Medicinal smoke inhalation

It is a specialized procedure that forms part of Dinacharya (daily routine) for health maintenance, as well as Kriya-Kala (treatment) and Pashchatkarma (post-procedures like Vamana and Nasya).

Benefits

Respiratory System Health: Effectively relieves chronic cough, asthma, congestion, and sinusitis by thinning mucus and opening respiratory passages. Head and Neck Region: Cures headaches, migraines, and heaviness in the head, acting as a direct therapy for Urdhwajatrugata (above-clavicle) disorders.

Basic Principles of Ayurveda:

Dhoomapana is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that requires the guidance and supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Attempting this procedure without proper knowledge and expertise can be dangerous and is not recommended.

Procedure for Ayurvedic therapies:

Preparation of the Dhooma Varti (Medical Wick)
A paste is prepared using medicinal herbs. This paste is applied evenly over a thin stick or reed and allowed to dry. Once dried, the inner stick is carefully removed, leaving a hollow medicinal wick. The prepared wick is traditionally inserted into a Dhumanetra, a specialized inhalation tube. This instrument is designed to help cool the smoke before it reaches the respiratory tract.

Importance

Dhoompana Therapy is important for maintaining respiratory, head, and neck health by balancing Kapha and Vata doshas and removing excess toxins. It supports sinus cleansing, improves breathing, enhances mental clarity, and strengthens oral health. Its types include Prayogika (daily hygiene), Snaihika (lubricating for Vata), Vairechanika (Kapha cleansing), Kashaghna (cough relief), and Vamaneeya (therapeutic emesis), each serving specific preventive and therapeutic purposes.
