As per Ayurveda, when digestive fire (jathragni ) is not proper it affects the subtler level metabolism (dhatvadni ) also and due to this malfunctioning of metabolism leads to formation of toxin and impaired formation and deposition of fat as cellulite.
While designing a treatment protocol, Ayurveda looks to restore balance holistically thus the mind, emotions, body type, and lifestyle of the person is taken into account. Vsa or loose fat is an Upadhatu (secondary structural component) of the body. Vsa is a dilute or thin form of Meda or fat dhatu under skin.
Due to vitiation of agni, partially digested or undigested nutrients reach the tissues and become toxic, called Ama. This Ama further accumulates in the gut and is then spread through subtle channels of the body. The case where it affect the updathu Vsa (the fat) , results in cellulite.
In a healthy state, Vasa acts as a lubricant for the body tissues, adds complexion, nourishes, and strengthens other tissues of the body. This is the reason why vitiated Vasa can make a strong negative impact on complexion and appearance.
We can categorize cellulite into three types:
Hard cellulite: The cellulite, combined with the tight skin, is firm and can be painful when touched. This kind of cellulite is more fibrotic in appearance.
Soft cellulite: This is spongy and not painful on touch. It is usually combined with fluid retention and gives looseness to the skin.
Edematous cellulite: This is among the most complex types of cellulite to treat. This is caused by poor circulation and is aggravated by fluid retention. In some cases, it can be painful and nodules kind of on the touch. it usually occurs in the extremities.
Causes of cellulite:
It is difficult to tell the exact cause of cellulite, but it appears due to some imbalance between the connective tissues and fat tissues under the layers of skin. Some factors can contribute to the development of cellulite, such as:
Age, diet, being female, hormonal changes, pregnancy, being obese, genetic factors, low muscle tone, poor circulation, sluggish liver, smoking, remaining in one posture for long durations, and continuously for a long period of time.
Possible cosmetic treatments for cellulite:
Weight loss and exercise can help to improve the appearance of cellulite. The available treatments are laser, radio-frequency systems, retinol cream, cool sculpting, manual lymphatic drainage massage, ozone therapy, liposuction etc. These may need to be repeated regularly to maintain a cosmetic look.
And these therapies should be followed by healthy diet and regular exercise. But recurrence has been seen after these therapies also. If we see the Ayurvedic view, then basic pathology is the malfunctioning of the metabolism. Restoring the normal functions of Agni on the grocer and subtler level by Ayurvedic Panchkarma and rasayana therapies is the solution to get rid of cellulite forever. Ayurveda treatment starts by identifying the body type of the person, which identifies tendencies of the body to get cellulite. Then determine the likely root cause. This helps to choose the right kind of therapies and herbs to restore the systemic balance and correct the metabolism.
After Panchkarma treatment, focusing on body type (constitution), we advise to adapt few lifestyle changes and healthy diets, for keep the Agni strong and an optimum metabolism. Yoga and meditation play a role in controlling physical and mental stress, that further prevent the impact of stress on metabolism, hence we advise a particular kind of yoga exercises and a few meditations.
